THE FEAST OF THE CARROCCIO BETWEEN STORY AND FOLKLORE

The Feast of the Carroccio is representation of the commemorative demonstrations of the Battle of Legnano, the fight of May 29th, 1176 that saw the victory of the commons allies in the League Lombarda on the imperial army of Fred I known as the Barbarossa. After the pause of the war period the Feast was taken back in 1952. Legnano has been divided into regions; ten in a fir st moment, that soon were reduced to eight. The region, literally" a group of houses around a road", it is a historical district of the city, over that the " casket " in which weapons, customs and ornaments are preserved for the parade. One of the characteristic moments of the Feast, where months of preparation and hard job of arrangement are shown, is the historical parade, that, together with the horse palio, it is held on the last Sunday of May.

There are more than thousand of people who walk around the streets, wearing old customs and bringing the objects realized according to the prescriptions of a special medieval period. The regions in the procession are followed by the Company of the death, a formation of cavalry that the legend wants conclusive for the fates of the battle of Legnano. The company is headed by Albert form Giussano, legendary figure of the commander, who won the battle. The procession is closed by the Carroccio, the wagon symbol of the town’s freedom against the presence of the imperial power. In the past, before fighting a priest should recite the Mass. This ceremony was followed by the religious investiture of the captains.

Under
the yard of the Carroccio is positioned the reproduction of
the cross of the Bishop of Milan. That cross is the prize of the
region who win the horses ride and it has to keep it safe for one year. The organization of the Feast is managed by the town administration, to whose vertex there is the supreme judge, that is the mayor of the city. |
